Reunion Band

Bill Sargent spent his youth growing up in Lake Mills, Wisconsin under the mentorship of Bob Schulz, Lake Mills Band Director. Bill feels very fortunate to have had the world-reknown cornetist, Bob Schulz, as his mentor and band director for his entire school life from Junior High School through his departure from high school.

This is a band of true “all-stars” from all over the country

From Carnegie Hall to California, from Canada to New Orleans, and on many ships at sea, Bob Schulz has wowed the traditional jazz world with his cornet playing and ability to relate to his audience. And – to think it all started here in Wisconsin!

Bob was born in Wonewoc, WI. Bob picked up his father’s cornet at the age of ten and has been blowing ever since. He was greatly influenced by Bob Scobey, who was active in Chicago and Madison in the late ‘50s and ‘60s. Bob was an original member of Wisconsin’s own Riverboat Ramblers and also played with James Dapogny’s Chicago Jazz Band. He was band director in Lake Mills from 1967 to 1979, teaching at the Junior High first, then later at the High School.

Bob joined the legendary Turk Murphy Jazz Band of San Francisco in 1979. His eight years with Turk included 300 taped radio shows, many LPs, tours of US and Europe and the Carnegie Hall tribute to Turk. Bob still leads the Turk Murphy band for special engagements.

He is the foremost exponent of the Bob Scobey trumpet style and is an outstanding vocalist in the tradition of Clancy Hayes. Bob was chosen to play the part of Bob Scobey with the Scobey Reunion Band engagement at the 1988 Los Angeles Classic Jazz Festival and in 1989 at the Big Horn Jazz Festival in Chicago. He has more than 35 LPs & CDs to his credit.

That same year he was voted #1 in the trumpet/cornet category and #4 in the male vocalist category, beating out Tony Bennett and Joe Williams of the Count Basie Orchestra, in a nationwide poll taken by the Mississippi Rag, the nation’s foremost jazz publication.

Bob can occasionally be heard nationally on the “Live At The Riverwalk” jazz program on NPR.

In addition to leading his own band in San Francisco, and performing with top jazz bands in California, Bob continues to perform as a headliner and special guest artist at jazz festivals internationally on a weekly basis.

Chelsea Krombach

"Krombach’s voice is big, rich and supple, recalling classic popular vocalists like Rosemary Clooney and Peggy Lee. Her rendition of Frank Loesser’s “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” left me bewitched." - Shepherd Express

Born and raised in Wisconsin, Chelsea started out as a child of the Musical Theatre.  She attended the highly selective Interlochen Arts Camp after her freshman year of high school, starred in GODSPELL and DAMN YANKEES during her junior and senior years, and at the urging of her choir and band directors, attended the Jamey Aebersold Improvisation Clinic, where she fell hard for jazz.  She immediately began sitting in at clubs, where she was heard by drummer Bill Sargent and immediately employed with the Bill Sargent Big Band.  Before her high school graduation, she recorded with Bill Sargent her first album, a sweet and genuine interpretation of standards, entitled "Look For The Silver Lining."

She then attended and graduated from the prestigious Musical Theatre program at the University of Michigan.  There, she was featured in several of the University's lavish productions, including OKLAHOMA!, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, A CHORUS LINE, and THE WILD PARTY, in which she stole the show as the fiercely vengeful vixen, Queenie.  Additionally, she spent two of her four college years as a member of the University's oldest co-ed a cappella singing group, Amazin' Blue, which performed in venues at Boston University, Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New York University, Columbia University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Her eclectic collection of solos with Amazin' Blue can be heard on the group's latest two recordings: "South U and State," and "Self Titled."

In the fall of 2003, Chelsea recorded her second album of standards - this time with Larry Fuller, former pianist of the Ray Brown Trio, and Paul Keller, former bassist of the Diana Krall Trio.  The album, called "Profile," which contains several of Chelsea's arrangements, was released on Keller's label, PKO Records.

Chelsea recently played the leading role of Amneris in Disney's AIDA at the Music Theatre of Wichita, and  lead the main stage big band, with Hank Jones on piano, at the San Jose Jazz Festival.

She is the vocalist with clarinetist Dave Bennett's Benny Goodman Tribute Band, exciting audiences with swing tunes and enchanting them with ballads made famous by Peggy Lee and Martha Tilton.  This septet tours throughout the United States and Canada, performing at venues such as the Capitol Theatre in Windsor, the Detroit Institute of Art, and the Chautauqua Amphitheatre.  Also with the Tribute Band, Chelsea was featured with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra at the Ohio Theatre and the Kingston Symphony Orchestra at the Grand Theatre in Ontario.

Chelsea is on Broadway with the show "WICKED". She is the understudy for the lead role of the show, and has played the lead on many occasions. She also sings jazz gigs as her schedule allows.

Kerry Christensen

Kerry's first yodeling performance was in 1977, at a Brigham Young University orientation assembly. His  yodeling brought 15,000 or so students to their feet for a standing ovation. Then his career really soared when Disney World in Orlando, Florida hired him to work at the German Pavilion of the Epcot Center in 1984 . He was the Disney World Yodeler from 1984 to 1990 and the leader of the night band for the last four of those years.

After his experience at Disney, Kerry headed out on his own and has had great success as one of only two or three professional, full-time yodelers in the United States. You will find him now at various German festivals around the U.S. and Canada.

Photo of Kerry Christensen & Bill Sargent". . . If good yodeling makes you smile, Kerry Christensen will have you grinning from ear to ear. Christensen is not just a good yodeler, he is a superb yodeler, a king among yodelers. Yodeling masters such as Christensen and his ilk have elevated what began as a fairly crude means of long distance Alpine communiation to an art form, a dazzling display of vocal acrobatics and pyrotechnics.

This is an opportunity to hear a world-class musician with an unusual and delightful specialty. Christensen estimates there are only two other full-time yodelers in the United States and fewer than 10 European yodelers who specialize in the especially dazzling bravour style of yodeling.

Christensen's last tabernacle performance attracted an enthusiastic SRO crowd, so an early arrival would probably be wise.

Yodeling music is a people's art form, accessible and enjoyable. Even among the masters, each individual yodeler has a style of his own, so this is really a one-of-a-kind opportunity.

Christensen is always expanding his yodeling horizons. Some of the things he will probably do Monday night can be heard nowhere else in the world. How about yodeling to the William Tell Overture? How about yodeling in a major key? How about yodeling to that most American of tunes, the Stars and Stripes Forever?

Christensen tells me he is beginning to experiment with jazz yodeling.

I can barely wait."
